5″Surely for your lifeblood I will demand a reckoning; from the hand of every beast I will require it, and from the hand of man. From the hand of every man’s brother I will require the life of man. 6 Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man his blood shall be shed; for in the image of God He made man. 7 And as for you, be fruitful and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth and multiply in it.” Genesis 9:5-7.

At face value these verses are quite plain. If you kill someone, someone, with every right of justice, will kill you. And make lots of babies. Multiply. This was God’s command to Noah after the flood. His command to Adam was very similar in Genesis 1:27-28, “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Multiply and subdue the earth. Seems like a simple command. And don’t kill.

Reading over the verses in 9:5-7 a few thoughts occur. Is this speaking specifically about the here and now? Kill someone, and their death will be avenged in short order? I think that’s what these verses were saying, for the culture and the time, mind you. But I think there is more to this.

Jesus, the son of man, as he is often called, is also visible in this little passage. Jesus. Our Lord. Our Savior. He is the one who will ultimately require the blood of those who have murdered and killed. I think this passage has an end-time connotation as well. Jesus will return. And he will judge the living and the dead. This includes those who commit abortions. Doctors and nurses. Mothers and fathers. Upset and unwed couples who thought that they had every right to have sex only to become pregnant. No one is excluded. By man their blood shall be required.

There is hope though. If you are reading this, and you have at one time been involved in an abortion. Whether a doctor, nurse, pressuring boyfriend, or even a woman who had an abortion. There is hope! Seek God. Ask and he will forgive you for any of the pain you have caused. Be forgiven, and he will heal the hurt and sorrow you deal with. The regrets and anxieties of past choices. He is the hope waiting for you. Be forgiven, and the life that is required of you will have been replaced by the death of Jesus. Please don’t delay.
