Lottery Babies

January 24, 2011

I wonder sometimes if people really understand what they are doing. I’ll let this article i read speak for itself. God, subpoena the conscience of the nation:

Parents Abort Twin Boys; Seek Sex Selection IVF to Have the Girl They Want

“As to diseases, make a habit of two things—to help, or at least do no harm.” -Hippocrates (Father of medicine)

From Down Under comes a story that we might like to deny exists. An Australian couple who is desperate to have a baby girl, recently aborted twin boys conceived through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)—because they were boys and they already had three of those. Now they are taking their case to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) in an effort to fight for the right to have a baby girl.
Since they have three boys, they admit that they really didn’t want more male children. Thus, they aborted the twins and ran back in to fight for another chance to have a girl. A review panel denied them the right to select their next child’s sex through IVF so they went to the VCAT to appeal. According to the story:
The couple said it had been a traumatic decision to make but they could not continue to have unlimited numbers of children.
Before we drop our jaws and declare, wow, that would never happen here, even with our abortion laws, think again. The couple has a back up plan, should VCAT’s decision hold to the panel review: they will come to the United Sates to conceive a girl. The story reports:
The woman – in her thirties – says she loves her sons but would do anything to have a daughter.
The man said: “After what we have been through we are due for a bit of luck. We want to be given the opportunity to have a girl.”
The woman, who is consumed by grief over the daughter who died soon after birth, admits she has become obsessed with having a daughter and it has become vital to her psychological health.
The way the IVF laws are in Australia, se selection is banned “unless it is necessary to avoid the risk of transmission of a genetic abnormality or genetic disease to a child.”

However, one IVF doctor has his own opinions on the couple’s pursuit of having a girl:
Australian IVF pioneer Gab Kovacs – not involved in the case – said he could not understand why the couple should be banned from having a girl. “I can’t see how it could harm anyone,” he said. “Who is this going to harm if this couple have their desire fulfilled?”
Let’s start there. Who is this going to harm?
I can think of two boys it has already harmed. There are two dead babies who were, apparently, healthy and showed no sign of any problems—except they were male and the couple wanted a female. So harm already has existed. Two babies gave their lives as this couple tried to play God.
How many people would have adopted those two baby boys? I could give you a list of names of people I personally know who would have adopted them to prevent their deaths. But these parents simply waited for the sex, didn’t like it and aborted them.
What the parents did is much how I select a phone number.  When I get a new cell phone, I ask the clerk to read me a list of numbers til I hear something I think I like that sounds easy to remember. And that’s the point. We get to make simple decisions about trivial thing like phone numbers. We do not get to just keep getting pregnant and aborting the babies until we get the sex we want.
Except we do.
Our society so honors some misguided freedom of choice that we allow such a mindset to be prevalent and accepted. We even support their “right” of we don’t agree with it because, by golly, that’s what our nation is about. And apparently it is since their back up plan is to come to the United Sates and get their girl.
Babies are not lottery numbers. They are not objects to be tossed around. Are we seeing this? A couple is publicly fighting to get to choose a baby’s sex after openly aborting twins in what appears a personal baby lottery. And people are defending them. Perhaps one of the most telling elements of this story is that they know the place they can do it, if Australia won’t let them, is in the United States.
Our nation used to have a reputation of religious freedom and godly values. These days we have a reputation of greed and choice.
This past weekend, in tandem with pro-abortion celebrations of the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion, president Obama made these comments:
I am committed to protecting this constitutional right. I also remain committed to policies, initiatives, and programs that help prevent unintended pregnancies, support pregnant women and mothers, encourage healthy relationships, and promote adoption.
And on this anniversary, I hope that we will recommit ourselves more broadly to ensuring that our daughters have the same rights, the same freedoms, and the same opportunities as our sons to fulfill their dreams. (Source)
Perhaps no statement emphasizes the need to pray for our nation as that of our nation’s leader. The truth is, no sons or daughters can fulfill their dreams if they are killed before they can breathe outside the womb.
There is one God and He is the only Creator who has a say.
And He is the only one who can be trusted to do no harm.
